RIP: Benazir Bhutto

I’m fairly well informed, but I really didn’t know Benazir Bhutto as well as I wished I had. The fact that she went back to Pakistan knowing that there were likely two choices – President or martyr, tells you what you need to know. I am more impressed with her now – and that’s a shame. Her father, her brothers, all suffered the same fate as she would. And the biggest benefiter of all this is our ally Musharraf. I’m not sure if he was complicit, but he sure as hell is doing a jig tonight.

Let’s hope Bhutto is ten times as powerful in death as she would have been leading Pakistan.

The following are a couple of interesting articles from Slate and Salon:

A little more of my childhood died today

Evel Knievel, along with Muhammed Ali, was one of the bigger characters of my childhood.   Evel Knievel died today at 69. I remember having the Evel Knievel stunt cycle and annoying my parents to watch him do some crazy stunt on ABC’s Wild World of Sports.   It’s a wonder I didn’t break my neck trying to replicate one of his stunts.

RIP to Evel… as well as to my childhood.

RIP: Banana Nicole Smith

This is all sorts of wrong; which means I love it

RIP – Paul Richardson

prichardson.jpg

Growing up in Philadelphia one of my favorite childhood memories is that of my father taking my younger sister and I to Phillies games. The Phillies were great in those days: Steve Carlton pitching, Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski hitting, Larry Bowa and Garry Maddox catching. And to top it off the soundtrack was provided by stadium organist Paul Richardson.

I’m certain that Paul Richardson is an integral part of many a Philadelphian’s childhood. Never seen, but the experiences wouldn’t have been the same without him.

Now when you go to a game, it’s pre-recorded songs and special effects, million dollar sound systems and games on the big screen.   Just like so many of today’s experiences, modern advances haven’t improved the experience, just made it modern.

Today Paul Richardson died after a long illness. Just one more time for Paul:

CHARGE!

In the news

Alrighty – so I missed a few things over the past few days…

Domino’s Owner Thomas Monoghan is creating his own town in Southwest Florida where abortion wouldn’t be legal, where contraceptives wouldn’t be available, and porn – well you get the point. This town will be called Ave Maria and apparently the law of the country doesn’t apply to people that live there. A man’s money trumps the constitution in this country.

Both Mississippi and South Dakota will apparently be attempting to outlaw abortion in their states. In South Dakota the law has no exceptions. This is all to force a Roe v. Wade fight to the Supreme Court stocked with Bush appointees. Since the Republicans don’t like the constitution – it’s their aim to change it. Sure Bush being President cant be too harmful.

And finally RIP to Don Knots, Dennis Weaver, and most importantly Herm Ludwig.

Sad news

Actor Chris Penn died tonight at the very young age of 43. Every news story will describe Chris Penn in reference to a famous brother and that’s a shame. He was a fine actor and the loss will be felt by his family, friends, and fans.

Condolences to his mother Eileen and his brothers Michael and Sean.

Much too young.

Please post your thoughts and condolences. I will pass this link onto Michael.

RIP: John Spencer and Richard Prior

So sad to hear John Spencer of The West Wing passed away today. At 58 he was way too young. He was always a favorite actor of mine from his days on LA Law. I was looking forward to Vice President McGary. I wonder how they will address it.

In my malaise I didn’t give props to Richard Prior last week. Richard Prior made it cool to curse. Thank you Richard – I wouldn’t be able to get through a day without your contributions.
