Blog Depression

I’ve been blogging for over a year now and while doing it found a steady group of blogging friends (look to the right under “Super Blog Friends” – let me know if I should add you too.)

Anyway – I’ve noticed that every once in awhile bloggers get tired, bored, annoyed with blogging for whatever reason.   Sometimes it intrudes with their life (or vice versa), sometimes you get bored, whatever. I noticed the trend about two weeks ago when suze decided to take a little vacation (a blogation?) that she wasn’t the first.   So it was good timing when I found the following funny public service announcement about blog depression.

Hopefully this helps (or makes you laugh)

Spam attack

So yesterday I noticed that I had 30 new comments when I checked my blog.   Turns out a porn site had decided to target my site by adding comments to all of my old posts.   They tried to add 132 comments to old posts.   Thanks to WordPress plug-in Akisment, most were turned away.

Spammers are the scourge of the internet.   They target sites that don’t want them to advertise their shit and add to the cost everyone pays online.

Little frustrations

So just because I’m now hosting my own blog at iamspencer, doesn’t mean that there haven’t been issues.   Seems as if there has been some issue with Godaddy, Godaddy and Comcast, and spammers.   Add to that I’ve been in Boston for two days and then went to New York City today and I just haven’t had a chance to really fix things.

Hopefully I will have things running well soon enough.

Welcome to an all new A Rubber Door

Welcome to the all new A Rubber Door. I grew tired of blogger being down so I bought a new URL, and upgraded my server, and decided to go with WordPress (thanks to Merujo and Urban Jacksonville). I have to say that the installation is increadibly easy. There’s a tool that imports all of your posts and comments. Like a lot of programs today, WordPress is extensible through the use of plug-ins. Much more flexible than blogger.

A few cool changes:

  • Categorized posts
  • Comments RSS – that allows you to track comments
  • New archives system
  • Cool new header (thanks Todd)
  • And a lot more things I’ve forgotten or don’t know about yet

If you have a link to my site on your blog, please update it to http://www.iamspencer.com (the name is still A Rubber Door though).

Some of the links are broken at the top of the page, but if you find any problems, suggestion, or feedback – please let me know.

Update: the links are updated at the top.   The posting problem is fixed – now you don’t need to be logged in to post.

Church of the Big Sky: An Open Letter to Blogger Support

I’ve lost patience with blogger. Over the past few months, the amount of time it has been down is unacceptable. I know it’s free – but the level of service they’ve been giving recently isn’t even worth that.

I suggest all Blogger users to post a link to this letter on their site and then also post a comment at the link as your way of signing it and showing support. The only way it gets better is if we raise a little noise.

Anyone out there?

So yesterday I wrote a very last minute post about last night’s episode of 24 that divulged what happened in the first 15 minutes of the show. This morning I awoke to a comment from someone admonishing me for the inadvertant spoiler. What I realized as I rode the train in is that people actually read this thing and that means I have some sort of responsibility. What the hell?

When you write thinking no one is reading, you can say what the hell you want – not worrying about feelings or in this case, spoiling a night’s good tv. Alwayswrite wrote something similar on her blog awhile back and I find it interesting that here I am in a similar situation.

Do I censor? Do I care?

In the end I want people to read this blog, but I also loathe censoring myself. I do remember avoiding all press, blogs, etc. while reading the last Harry Potter due to the fear that the end would be spoiled for me. How could I ever do that to someone else? So I will take care not to spoil things for others, but I will not refrain from discussing them.

A rather fine line don’t you think?

Working can get you fired

Great article on Yahoo about a Chicago workplace consultancy that has put together a list of workplace horrors. In a year when my former employer fired my friend Ryan without warning for comments he made on his blog. I’m glad to see that there are people out there willing to call out idiotic management decisions.
