Philadelphia: the place that kicks your ass

Apparently another attack took place in the SEPTA terminal near where a man was beaten to death last week. This woman was lucky, and survived her attack. The SEPTA police was able to catch 5 of the 10 thugs by stopping the subway train at the next stop and capturing them there where the woman identified her attackers.

This is ridiculous. On top of this the DA has charged the five with robbery and assault charges; here’s my idea – in light of what happened last week, these idiots should be charged with attempted murder. If you want to send a message this is the best way.

Another thing – for years, crime has plagued other parts of Philadelphia, leaving the Center City relatively safe. Murders in the city, while not non-existent, still are rare. But it couldn’t stay confined for too long. Allowing
crime to run rampant (yes I said allowing) only allowed crime to overflow. Maybe now the city will care just a little bit more. When it was in the poor and working class neighborhoods, it was important, but now that it’s in the tourist and business areas, I guarantee the city will squash this.

Newspaper’s should stay out of blogging

Yesterday in Philadelphia there was a senseless crime – 36 year old manager of a Starbucks was killed by a gang of students from Simon Gratz High School at 2:30 in the afternoon.   He was simply leaving work for the day and never made it home.   This kind of violence is so upsetting; children in the middle of the day taking a man’s life.   The school district, the teachers, the parents, and of course the students seem to be a lost cause – essentially allowing the human version of pack dogs out on the street to murder.

All of that said – I was reading the account of this on Philly.com and the comments of readers and the vileness of the responses are disgusting.   Racist rants threatening violence from the illiterates of our society.   It’s disgusting – and this is on a newspaper   website- not a blog.   I’m all for web 2.0 – but I wonder if all this free speech is worth it when in crosses with the delivery of news.   I know people like to talk and argue, but the discourse found at these websites is generally not intelligent.

I don’t know why I expect more.

The curse of Billy Penn

Sorry for another YouTube post, but I hardly ever post about sports, so unless you know me personally, you probably don’t have an idea how I live and die with the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies. I also follow the Sixers, but the NBA is such a horrible product, I wouldn’t call myself a devoted fan. The curse of William Penn was coined because no Philadelphia team has won a championship since the statue of William Penn on Philadelphia City Hall was replaced as the tallest structure in the city.

I can’t wait for this curse to be moot – but doesn’t the waiting make the winning even sweeter?

Anyway, songwriter Ryan Parker has summed it all up in song, and I figured I’d share.

The Wild, Wild West circa 2007: Philadelphia

Recently I’ve considered packing up and leaving the city where I’ve lived, gone to school, and worked in for my entire life. I love this town and think it gets a bad rap, but have gotten bored because I am so familiar with it. It’s as if the city has become a safety blanket for me. I’ve become comfortable and content and Ive always felt those were somewhat bad feelings to have. Now it seems I have more reason to leave this city and this state.

Since Sunday 3 police officers have been shot in Philadelphia (29 officers have been shot at this year). Philadelphia police have fatally shot 14 people this year. Last year, 20 people were killed in the city in police shootings, the most since 1980, according to FBI statistics.   There have been 333 homicides in Philadelphia as of Monday.   Because of the NRA and the idiots that think taking a gun to shoot a deer is a sport, the state and more importantly the city are awash in guns. And as importantly, the city is awash in dangerous people who are willing to brazenly use these weapons.   Authorities talk about “no respect for authority” – it goes beyond that, there’s no respect for human life.   It literally has become the wild, wild west here. I have never feared for the safety of friends and family, but I now believe that to naive if not outright foolish.

I have a lot of hope for Michael Nutter as the incoming mayor – the policing strategy has got to change, but there needs to be a response from this state that does something about the guns on the street.   The fact that they don’t do anything in light of the people being killed in increasing numbers shows what they feel about the residents of this city – but I know rural Republicans support the police – let’s see if they leave the people that put their lives on the line to protect others hanging.

As for my friends and family, you can’t hide from violence, but be careful what areas of Philadelphia you visit.   Be mindful of your surroundings.   I guess this is good advice anywhere.

Hope in the form of Michael Nutter

Last night in Philadelphia, Michael Nutter won the mayoral democratic primary. In Philadelphia, where Democrats outnumber Republicans 4-1, that means he’ll be the next Mayor.   Michael Nutter isn’t the coolest candidate to grace the stage.   His speeches aren’t happenings like Barak Obama’s are.   But he’s level-headed, smart, and has a record of doing the right thing without regard to politics.   The smoking ban in Philly, his doing; even though it wasn’t popular among restaurant owners.

When he resigned his city council seat last year to run, I thought that he’d be a great mayor, but people won’t realize that.   He always seemed like the “smart kid” that was picked on in school.   The choice of the union of political bosses will win.   This is a city that elected John Street mayor, not once, but twice.

Substance doesn’t matter.

But I was proven wrong.   Given a choice between big talkers, old-politcal bosses, and sexier choices, Philadelphians made the right choice.   I wasn’t hopeful they would.   I don’t think the general public is that smart.   It’s the general public that has given us 6 years of George Bush.   But seeing Michael Nutter win gives me hope that at some point people will say “enough is enough” and demand better legislators.

How about Philly showing voters all over the country how it should be done?
