First 50 down; 50 more to go.

51. MTV Unplugged (2001) – Jay-Z
52. Gimme Fiction (2005) – Spoon
53. Antics (2004) – Interpol
54. The Greatest (2006) – Cat Power
55. Broken Boy Soldiers (2006) – The Raconteurs
56. Failer (2002) – Kathleen Edwards
57. Hot Fuss (2004) – The Killers
58. Treble & Tremble (2004) – Earlimart
59. Neon Bible (2007) – Arcade Fire
60. The Optimist LP (2001) – Turin Brakes

top_100_51_60comments: I didn’t realize how great Jay-z was until this album; thank the Roots for that one. Kathleen Edwards quickly became one of my favorite artists. A worthy successor to Shawn Colvin. Earlimart channels Elliot Smith in an album designed to honor their friend. BTW – I like the Raconteurs more than the White Stripes.

Top 100 Albums 2000-2009: 61-70

Just found my first “mistake”. Definitely should have put Metric’s Fantasies ahead of It’s Blitz by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but when I’ve listened to somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,000 albums in the past 10 years – the difference between a couple of spots is minor.

61. Back to Black (2007) – Amy Winehouse
62. New Magnetic Wonder (2007) – The Apples in Stereo
63. Golden Hum (2001) – Remy Zero
64. Loyalty to Loyalty (2008) – Cold War Kids
65. The Seldom Seen Kid (2008) – Elbow
66. How to Walk Away (2008) – Juliana Hatfield
67. The Stage Names (2007) – Okkervile River
68. Achilles’ Heel (2004) – Pedro The Lion
69. St. Elsewhere (2006) – Gnarlz Barkley
70. It’s Blitz! (2009) – Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The running list can be found here: Top 100 Albums: 2000-2009

comments: I wouldn’t be surprised to see Okkervile River’s The Stage Names in the top 10s of national publications. It  may end up being a classic in the same way Neutral Milk Hotel’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea has become over the years. I think Elbow may be the best UK band out there. Yeah, better than them. Cold War Kids could become one of my top bands with their current trajectory. And there is something about Juliana Hatfield – she’s still as hot as I remember, but that’s not why she’s on this list – twice.

Now we’re deep into it.

71. Fantasies (2009) – Metric
72. Vampire Weekend (2008) – Vampire Weekend
73. The Boy With No Name (2007) – Travis
74. The Ecstatic (2009) – Mos Def
75. Show Your Bones (2006) – Yeah Yeah Yeahs
76. Come to Where I’m From (2000) – Joseph Arthur
77. Accelerate (2008) – R.E.M.
78. 19 (2008) – Adele
79. Writer’s Block (2007) – Peter Bjorn and John
80. Learn to Sing Like a Star (2007) – Kristin Hersh

Best-2000-71-80comments: The first two of any 2009 albums appear here. It’s hard to judge whether or not Fantasies or The Estatic have staying power, but I can’t stop playing either and both will be at the top of my year end list. Accelerate was a return to form for R.E.M. And 19 was worthy of Adele’s Grammy

comments: Everything Sleater-Kinney releases is worth owning – I hope they come back. Fountains of Wayne, Aimee Mann, Brendan Benson, and Jon Brion make this the power-pop 10. Juliana Hatfield’s Beautiful Creature is an album that I forgot about but in putting this list together, I went back and realized that she came of age with this album.

92. Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah (2005) – Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah
93. You & Me (2008) – The Walkmen
94. Born Again in the USA (2006) – Loose Fur

98. Sunset Studies (2000) – Augie March
99. These Four Walls (2006) – Shawn Colvin
100. The Weight is a Gift (2005) – Nada Surf

comments: Loose Fur is a side protect of Jeff Tweedy and Born Again in the USA was an album I liked more than most Wilco albums of the decade. musicforthemorningafter by Pete Yorn has some great. Spoon had a great decade and became one of my favorite bands. Kill the Moonlight has some great songs and a lot of songs you’ve heard in movies and television.
