My first year living in DC, I wandered down to the Mall during some random festival, right around sunset. I plopped down by a tree with a bottle of water, just to give my tootsies a rest. Imagine my amazement to discover I was just a few feet away from a little stage when Aretha Franklin suddenly came out and starting belting out the tunes. I was in heaven. It was one of my best random DC experiences ever. (They grow fewer and farther between the longer I stay here...)
